Attendance Obligation

For many courses and practicals,  attendance is part of the course examination. The attendance requirement means that you need to be present at (a percentage of) the meetings.

If you do not pass the attendance requirement you cannot pass the exam, the resit or the course. If you took the exam or the resit, your exam result will be annulled (deleted).

If you already passed the attendance requirement, but failed the exam(s) you can re-attend tutorial group meetings to prepare for a resit, see  'Repeat Education'.

The minimal required attendance can differ per type of meeting and per programme. The formal regulation can be found in the current Rules and Regulations.

Be on time

You'll have to be on time to make your attendance count. There is no '10-minutes' grace period, that has been removed from the Exam- and Education Regulations. An instructor/tutor can deny access to a tutorial, workshop or practical if you aren't on time.

Remotely joining a tutorial meeting

A tutorial meeting can be followed online (hybrid) if you are unable to attend on campus, but this online participation will not count as 'having attended' for the attendance requirement.

For bachelor students: reporting absence, attending session elsewhere.

You may only miss a certain number of tutorial group meetings if you report your absence personally to the tutor, at the latest on the day of the tutorial meeting.

At the start of a course, the  coordinator will announce if it is allowed to attend any missed sessions in another tutorial group. If so, you contact the tutor of the group and he/she will decide if you can join his/her group for that session.  Please note that your attendance record will not change, only the attendance in your assigned tutorial group counts!

Attendance registration in Canvas "Roll Call"

Since period 3 of 2022-2023, Canvas is being used to register attendance in the tutorial groups. Tutors mark someone as 'present' or 'absent' in the  so called "Roll Call"-module.

If you go to 'Grades > Roll Call Attendance' , you are presented with an overview of total registered days (either 'absent' or 'present') and a list of days marked as 'absent'.  Your tutor is the first person to contact if you have questions about the registration of your attendance.  Want to know more? See the page "Canvas attendance registration for tutors"  for more information.

Preferential scheduling in exceptional circumstances

In case of exceptional personal circumstances* that warrant preferential scheduling regarding tutorial group times, you must inform the Academic Advisers via email (bachelors: fpn-academicadv-ba@maastrichtuniversity.nl / masters: fpn-academicadvisers-ma@maastrichtuniversity.nl) as soon as possible (at least one week prior to the course period). Following this notification, the Academic Advisers will determine whether you are eligible for such an individual arrangement. If structural preferential scheduling is required, you must request an "Advice Allocation Facilities" from Disability Support. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Academic Advisers.

Adjustments can be made to accommodate two studies. However, working alongside your studies is not considered a valid reason to request preferential scheduling. Students must adhere to the education hours 8:30 - 18:00 and plan work shifts accordingly.

* such circumstances may include (chronic) illness, disability, participation in top-level sports, or (urgent) family circumstances.
